I've almost finished reading 'The Widow of the South' and I have to say that I kind of waded through the first chapters, I found it a bit hard going at first. Perhaps because it was so grim and full of death. But it got easier as it went along. I would call it an interesting and unusual read, and it really paints an incredible picture of that era. Hope that helps!
