Biscuits & Gravy

I'm a California girl who married a cowboy.
(Anyone born in the midwest is a cowboy to me!) So naturally, my husband was horrified when I had no idea what biscuits & gravy was. I remember the first time he made them for me. I was more scared that he didn't use measuring cups than I was trying it. Although I liked it, I'm a purist in the kitchen and that means I like to "measure" ! I knew I had quite a task ahead of me...to find the best biscuits & gravy recipe out there. This is the recipe we use now, and although I hate to admit it, this recipe is sooooo good and comforting and perfect for cold winter weekend mornings ! A definite 'boys' breakfast !

Sausage Gravy {adapted from Southern Living, March, 2003}

16 ounces pork sausage ( I use Jimmy Dean "Sage")
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
4 2/3 cups milk
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper

Cook sausage in a large skillet over medium heat, stirring until it crumbles and is no longer pink. Drain fat from skillet.

Add flour, milk, salt and pepper to large bowl. Whisk until well blended.. Add milk mixture to skillet with sausage and simmer until thickened, takes about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serve over biscuits. I use the frozen Pillsbury Grands biscuits in Buttermilk or Southern Style.

Yield: Makes 4 cups

Note: This is the recipe doubled so I can use the whole pound of sausage.

If you don't need to feed six or more, then cut the recipe in half.

It's DIY Day over at a soft place to land. & Tuesdays at the Table & Foodie Friday !

Biscuits and Gravy....My favorite breakfast and sometimes dinner that my Mama made! Your title captured my attention this morning, so I had to come and have a plate...I use the GRANDS, too! Being a Girl Raised In Texas with a Cowboy Dad and Iowa Farm Mom, we had lots of meals that reflected both parts of the USA. I blogged about 'Mama's Kitchen' last month. Here's the link if you'd like to read it...

YUMMY! Your the best ever :) I have been meaning to look for a biscuits and gravy recipe now for a few months as it reminds me of eating breakfast with my grandfather who passed away 5 years ago. It's a great thing I'm going shopping later today so I can pick up a few things I need! Thanks again :)

We are HUGE biscuits and gravy fans here. Foodie son (age 16) is making a big batch this weekend for a men's prayer breakfast at church. Of course, I won't let him take off without me getting my fill first, lol.

Thanks for sharing!

Blessings!

Oh, my. Gravy was the first thing I learned to cook (not counting baked goods). I do wish I'd had this recipe. It seems so much less stressful than the flour whisked into the butter and the milk in a slow stream and...

Thanks!

I came over to check out your biscuits and gravy. This is my favorite breakfast. However, you little dog sidetracked me and I went to her blog. I had never heard of cotons. I have a Bichon Frise and think all little white dogs are just the sweetest thing ever.

Well, I was born (and live) in the Midwest, but I never thought of myself as a cowgirl:) I don't often make biscuits and gravy...it is too good and too fattening. I think there is an art to it. Mine turns out just okay...yours looks much better. Sue

May I link your post on my website? I loved this recipe. I do make biscuits and gravy, but it was more like, add milk and flour until it looks right. So no surprise it didn't always taste right. Anyway, I was just going to talk about my misadventures and then leave a link to your recipe

I have never mastered biscuits and gravy...strange, it cannot be that difficult but the flavor must be "just so". Like you I am a measurin'gal.
